If space is at a premium, choosing the right space-saving appliances can help to make your kitchen feel light and airy.
Remember “The Little Paris Kitchen ” series with Rachel Khoo ? Now that’s what you call a tiny kitchen !
But all kitchens are not that small, are they ?
But in our many years of designing kitchens, one problem continues to crop up: making enough space. The way that we use kitchens has changed, and it’s no longer just a place that we prepare and store food. Kitchens are for dining, entertaining, working, socialising, and much more, but many were designed just to cook in. There are also a lot more appliances that we consider kitchen essentials that wouldn’t have been a consideration 10 or 20 years ago. The result is a battle for space in your kitchen, that we believe can be overcome with some clever design and space-saving appliances.
Shop smaller
In response to the demand for smaller appliances, manufacturers like Neff have created smaller-scale appliances for tiny kitchens. Not only will they save on space, but they’re often eco-friendly and cheaper to run. These appliances are perfect for smaller families who don’t buy as much food or wash as many dishes at once. Slimline appliances allow you to utilise space that may otherwise have been wasted. Check out their full range here.
Another tip is to look for appliances that combine multiple functions. Perhaps your integrated oven also doubles as a microwave, like the Neff Compact Microwave Ovens. Like this C17MS32H0B
Invaluable in any cookaholic’s kitchen, these compact ovens feature an integral microwave designed to combine the traditional functions of an oven so you can cook your favourite dishes in a fraction of the time. Offering the ultimate in flexibility, food is cooked quickly and dishes that benefit from oven baking/roasting are left beautifully fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside. The Neff range offers multiple functions in one appliance, thus freeing up extra space on your countertops that will instantly make your kitchen feel bigger and more comfortable to use.
If you’re yearning for a range why not opt for the Everhot 60?
Town or country, this is the perfect choice for the smaller kitchen since the 600mm width will fit a standard 600mm wide cooker space. Installation is incredibly straightforward since neither flue nor reinforced floor is needed and it simply plugs into a 13 amp socket, keeping any disruption to a minimum. You can also forget the toaster with this oven as you can toast on the hotplate in an instant, freeing up even more counter space.
Are built-in appliances worth it?
Integrated appliances are brilliant for smaller kitchens as they take up space that would have otherwise been used by cupboards. Ovens, hobs, fridges, freezers, dishwashers, and microwaves can all be easily integrated into your bespoke kitchen. They’re generally smaller than their freestanding counterparts and have sleek and sophisticated appeal, helping to create a clean finish throughout. Some people prefer to keep their appliances hidden for a more streamlined look.
The real disadvantage of integrated appliances is their permanence. You can’t move them around your kitchen and they can be more difficult to access for maintenance and servicing.
Think beyond the kitchen
Another thing to consider is whether some of your appliances can find a home somewhere other than your kitchen. The oven obviously isn’t going anywhere, but a chest freezer might be more at home in the garage and your rarely-used kitchen mixer doesn’t need to be on the countertop gathering dust.
