A traditional kitchen design offers timeless style and a hard-working heart to your home that can be enjoyed for many years to come.
When customers tell us they’re looking for traditional kitchen design, it can mean a number of things – hence the importance of our comprehensive design services! But there are certain elements that crop up on most occasions: solid, Shaker-style wooden cabinets, Belfast sinks, traditional cast iron range cookers and more. We’ll take a closer look at the traditional kitchen and hope you’ll be inspired to incorporate some of these elements into your classic kitchen design.
The traditional kitchen design
You don’t have to live in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere to have a traditional kitchen – they can look great in modern and period properties. If you’re blessed with original period fittings in your property, these can be incorporated into your new kitchen, but even a blank canvas can yield stunning results. From relaxed farmhouse designs to elegant Shaker styles, traditional kitchens have something to offer to everyone and will be a timeless addition to your home.
Some traditional kitchen designs opt to make natural wood the star of the show. You could opt for lighter, fresher coloured woods like oak and elm, or perhaps go for a more dramatic darker finish in mahogany. Natural wood kitchens are predominantly complimented with light, neutral shades.
Alternatively , you could choose painted kitchen cupboards. Pastels and neutrals hold universal appeal, but we’re seeing a huge resurgence of deep, dramatic alternatives to grey – particularly green, burgundy and blue – creating an elegant appeal, an effect doubled if used on both cabinetry and walls.
Shaker style kitchens are inspired by the furniture designed by the Shakers, who were extremely skilled craftsmen and carpenters. They commonly feature simple, symmetrical wooden cabinetry with minimal decoration, recessed panel doors, light finishes and basic hardware. At the other end of the spectrum, traditional kitchens can also be influenced by Victorian and Edwardian opulence, featuring carefully chosen ornate designs.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that a traditional kitchen design eschews modern kitchen technology, but that’s not necessarily the case. Modern-day range cookers pack a punch in the high-tech stakes but maintain their traditional appearance. If you’re opting for a bespoke kitchen design, we can also look at adding cupboards and fixtures that’ll keep your gadgetry at hand but out of sight.
