Deck the halls and the rest of the property by decorating your home inside and out this Christmas.
Decorating your home for Christmas has become a joyous festive tradition for many families. Whether you’ll be perusing your local Christmas tree farm for the perfect tree or nominating someone to clamber up into the loft to retrieve a faithful artificial one, our first thought is usually the Christmas tree. But why stop there? You can get that warm and fuzzy festive feeling as soon as you catch sight of your house by taking the Christmas decorations outside this year.

Setting the scene
If you have a path leading up to your front door, this is a wonderful place to begin your decor. For a subtle touch of magic, you could add strings of fairy lights to either side of the path, creating a discrete twinkling walkway. There is a wide range of solar-powered outdoor lights available, ideal if you don’t have a plug socket outdoors.
We find that garden foliage can be looking a little sparse by December, so you might want to introduce some extras. Potted holly brimming with crimson berries and an evergreen topiary will serve you well for many years to come.
If there’s ever a time for excess, it’s Christmas. We’ve seen beautiful paths lined with light-up candy canes and gifts that’ll make children squeal with glee.
If you’re expecting guests for a festive get-together, you could choose to line the path with storm lanterns and candles. You can also hang lanterns from trees, but be wary of fire safety precautions.

A Christmas wreath is the traditional symbol of welcome for December doors. There are a great number of options, both natural and artificial, for you to choose from. Your local florist or garden centre will have you beautiful pine-scented fresh wreaths, and you may also be able to pick up the materials to help you to fashion your own. There’s a great guide to making your own wreath here.
If you’d prefer something that can be reused year after year, there’s even more to choose from. Wreaths made of baubles, bells, willow and more are widely available. We’ve noticed a huge trend for oversized bows that make your front door look like a Christmas present, but please ensure you leave space for the postman to deliver your Christmas cards!
A final magical tip for front doors is to attach a tiny bell or two to the handle. That way every guest’s arrival will remind you of the tinkle of Santa’s sleigh bells.

If it’s possible, it’s wonderful to place your Christmas tree in the front window, so the twinkling lights can be seen from the street. You might prefer only a slight overlap of just a few branches to ensure plenty of natural light comes in.

Candles on a windowsill look wonderful, but for the sake of your curtains you may wish to invest in some hyper-realistic battery-powered alternatives.
