Colours for 2015: Interior Trends

A Guide To The Latest Interior Trends of 2015

Even this early into the year, interior design experts are dropping hints about what could be the biggest trends for 2015. When it comes to colours, it seems that the key words for the coming months are brights and neutrals.

This is great news, because the four hot design concepts of the moment dovetail perfectly with these colour themes. Why not make 2015 the year you revamp your home using this handy guide to coming interior trends?

Look Back to Modernism

After the success of the TV series Mad Men, the biggest trend for 2015 is set to be a revival of mid-20th century modern design using the latest approach to materials. Salvaged wood recalls the elegance of 1950s teak G-Plan bedroom sets but with impeccable environmental credentials. Channelling the spirit of Mies van der Rohe, metals form the bases for tables and chairs and are combined with other materials such as leather and glass.
If you’re looking for the perfect colour palette to complement the nouveau-modernist look, you can’t do much better than the classic 1960s shades. Choose olive and orange to strike a bold, clashing note in your living room. Go for funky geometric designs in the bedroom and don’t be afraid of mixing vibrant colours such as bright red and purple.

Take Inspiration from Nature

One of the coming themes for 2015 is bringing nature inside the house, and blurring the demarcation lines between the inside and the outside. The perfect way to achieve this is by having a big picture window with a view of your garden.

If large expanses of glass aren’t feasible where you live, fill your space with living walls, flower arrangements and furniture designed to contain artistically arranged collections of plants. When it comes to a colour scheme for this nature-based décor, of course you must think green.
Go wild and bring together every possible shade of green, combined with floral wallpaper and brightly printed fabrics. Set off this riot of botanical brights with Zen accents in black, white and beige.

Go Ethnic

Ethnic influences in soft furnishings are likely to be strong in the coming months, with African textiles, Turkish kilims and Indonesian ikats and batiks ruling the roost. Traditional motifs and patterns will dominate, making rugs, cushions and upholstered chairs the centrepieces of your room.

If you want to know how to really show off a kilim to its best advantage, don’t put it on the floor: take inspiration from Sigmund Freud’s study and drape it over your couch. To really rock the ethnic look, make your interior as eclectic as possible, like the home of an eminent anthropologist.
Paint your surfaces in deep, rich, glossy blues and make your guests think they’ve stumbled into London’s Soane Museum. Or create a clash with vivid pinks, purples and greens set against aqua and turquoise.

Remain Neutral

If you’re not impressed by the vibrancy of the trends mentioned up until now, you may prefer a visually calmer ensemble. In which case, you’ll be pleased to hear that grey is the hottest neutral colour of the moment. Use soft grey walls as the backdrop to darker door frames and a paler grey ceiling.
This colour scheme is the ideal choice for rooms which feature polished concrete floors or poured concrete fittings. If you like, you can soften the grey with a warm beige sofa or accents of natural wood. For those who’re feeling bold, the occasional splash of mustard-coloured upholstery also works beautifully with a grey room.
Whether you’re a 20th century throwback, a child of nature, a magpie for the best of different cultures or simply a lover of neutral shades, there’s something to please you among the leading interior trends for 2015.
When it comes to freshening up your home’s interior décor, why not start by selecting your favourite theme and then deciding on the perfect colour palette with which to bring it to life? Just think, you could be the first among your social circle to make use of this peek into the decorative themes of the year to come.
